No need to fill the air with empty pleasantries with me. Sitting together in quiet and sharing quiet is precious. too often we speak merely as a means of controlling our experience. Those who like to talk often have not spent any time learning to listen, not to others, and especially not to themselves.

Silence speaks louder than a volcano erupting … when we understand how to go inside and listen. When we build enough connection inside with our own personal language of silence … then our words carry a different meaning behind them. This is often missed by those who do not understand silence and have not spent any real time listening to silence. Feeling the spaces we can create with silence and how our minds seek to hijack this space because it is inevitably a space of vulnerability. This space which is a threat to the controlled programming of the limited ego mind space – our monkey mind – requires repeated disciplined engagement in order to still the monkey mind and step through the illusions of its programming. If we are rushing from one meeting to the next, from one job to the next how do we let ourselves feel the spaces we hold inside our minds? Inside our hearts? Where is our silence in the moment? What does it feel like? That space inside? What is your language within?

Learn to hear and the world hears you.

Learning to still my mind … and quiet my limited thoughts patterns to hear my Heart has been the hardest and the most rewarding Journey. I still have lots to learn -though I have, with a lot of hard work, come to understand a great deal of how I interact with reality and create my reality. Healing sucks and is never easy and I will never, ever say it is otherwise. In order to empower others we must first step into our own strength. IF we cannot hear our own Hearts from the noise of our conditioned programming and mental jail cell … then we are not empowering ourselves .. and certainly we should avoid making any claims at empowering others.

My dearest friend Darlene Drewniak has provided an exceptional Gift of support in being able to develop my own understanding of Self and personal tools for learning to quiet my mind and hear beyond my programming and mental projections. Working in sessions with her over the last 15 years has been a true education in the mechanics of the mind and of how Love really does manifest. Amazingly challenging and rewarding all at the same time.

One of the biggest learning lessons I have experienced and witnessed in others, is that until a person has that first , second or third experience of feeling the Peace of quieting themselves and going inside and feeling the mind still they will continue to believe that they are or have achieved quiet through the control and suppression of feelings. I speak from my own personal experience of being attached emotionally to all the information about Peace and meditation and Love. We can be attached emotionally to many things – limiting our awareness of the situation we are creating and why … never mind the how. I used to go about my life assuming I understood what stillness was, what Peace meant (serious meditating practice for 15yrs) … when I encountered my limited ego mind for the first, second, 22,000th time … it gave me much deeper perspective than I ever could imagined let alone have thought existed.

My own experience has shown me that until you look inside, people, money, things, external to your Heart space will always have an influence over you that you are not aware of. Until you are aware of these attachments you cannot say you are empowered or that you can empower others. Until you are capable of standing strong in a space of stillness and observation of the mechanics of your limited ego mind, you cannot say you understand communication with others or with yourself. Yes of course we all are capable of talking, speech, writing, etc … but until you feel the stillness inside you cannot even pretend to be capable of truly appreciating the depth of the ways humans can communicate … or deny in the same breath.

This goes beyond active listening….active listening is a concept of mental analysis – it is still an exceptional skill to have, not that it is used by many. Feeling stillness inside is like developing the most sensitive kind of radar of the Heart. Often people will get stuck in the concept of the Void … this is a gap in understanding. The void of mental activity is not an end goal. It is a point of reference for the gap in fragmented mental programming that can only be found out through stilling the mind.

Once we begin to feel the fragments we have operated from for so long then and only then can we begin to heal our minds and change the way we use our minds in order to find our True Hearts and connect with our Soul.

The strength of facing these gaps between the fragments of our mental constructs and the strength required to stop ourselves from being manipulated by our conditioning and our habits of operating from this fragmented reality is very telling. To anyone who has spent any time disciplining their awareness and going inside to find the language of stillness .. when encountering people who operate blindly from a fragmented reality of mental projection, judgement and assumption of fear based ego … the loudness of a fragmented mind seeking to validate itself can be like ramming a grenade down your throat and pulling the pin.

When people hide and act from denial of their limited ego mind it is even louder.

It is in these moments that the Love we have for ourselves is the most important thing to share. To understand and accept and support others on their Journey – no matter what has always been THE primary source of my desire to nurture and connect with others. Love is always the answer in sharing and communicating. Sometimes Love comes out in very honest ways others are not ready to hear or accept because of attachment to past hurts or attachment to validating ego. Emotional filters always affect the interpretation of communication. This is why stillness is so vitally important to understand. IF we do not understand the emotional filters/baggage and the depth to which we can let them control our perceptions and understanding of ourselves and others, then there is no way to understand how to be honest with ourselves or with others, or to honesty when spoken by others.

Learn to hear and the world hears you.

Living Art In Training & Training The Art Of Living

The following is written from personal experience. My insight is from finally beginning to understand how much pain and fear have been embedded deep inside my mind and how I have kept myself from letting the fear and pain in and how keeping myself blocked like this has kept me from healing deep wounds. Real healing work is both profoundly challenging and rewarding at the same time.

This kind of awareness has not come from my martial arts practice. I have been seeing a friend for bodywork for the last 15 years – Darlene Drewniak. It is with Darlene’s support that I have come to understand the depths behind the mechanics of the mind and how I keep myself isolated from my wounds. While I see the similarities between physical training and how it relates to and supports the discipline I seek with my mind in order to heal  – nothing comes close to the depth of awareness I am learning about from my work with Darlene.

Life is a journey. We all know this. Deep down. If we are open to listening we can hear ourselves, our Hearts whispering to ourselves in the wind as it blows through the tress and the way the waters of a stream kiss the banks of the bed that is its home.

Walking through life means learning to live. Learning to live requires a great deal of courage. Why courage you ask? I mean you live right? You get up and you go to work and you have a family and you hang out with friends and maybe you go to the gym or not, maybe you work in the fields planting food for the world to eat – maybe just enough for yourself.

Life requires courage because of the decisions required to be alive. NOT just going through the motions, living in the system of opinions and perceptions hoisted upon us by the mass of unconscious programs of the society, or the family we were born into. Learning to feed our minds and hearts can take a lot of courage and discipline of desire to want more and to reach for more.

What is this more? What more could there be? Well a lot really. If you are living in the system of programmed assumptions about the world – this includes all the drama and all the fears and all the judgements and limitations that go with it … you are not really honouring your Self. Now why would I bring up honour? Is that not an ancient outdated warrior code thing? Well … yes and absolutely not.

Yes, ancient and modern warrior societies and codes all have a version of honour that parallels their societal and cultural norms. Except in modern times and when it comes to Living with genuine presence, Honouring one’s Self is about respect and acceptance of Self, no matter what, regardless of what the external world has been telling you since you were born. Respect is not earned through aggression or fear. Often as humans we are conditioned to use those two main modes of operating to build an illusion of respect through varying degrees of intimidation – bullying if you will.

This kind of respect is based on a lack of value for others because of how little we value ourselves. This is why the aggression and fear are so common place. Often an event will happen and we will get caught in the emotional/feeling impact of the event and not understand what has happened to us. The Way we choose to use our minds determines HOW such an event really does affect our reality. What do I mean our minds affect our reality? Well … just go back and let yourself feel such an event – if you can. See how much luck you have with that. How did that feel…? Could you let yourself feel such an event? Do you have the strength to go back into a traumatic event and let yourself feel it and to without judgement or fear ALLOW yourself you FEEL how you attached to it and how you have used it to define who you are?

Can you feel the way you mind limited by the attachment and energy used to keep the trauma isolated tries to distract you and keep you from being present with the pain? Being able to be present with the pain is an art and requires a great deal of courage. Courage is something we all have. There are depths of courage within all of us that are truly breathtaking when it rises to the surface and we ALLOW ourselves to step out of the box of isolation and train ourselves to LIVE through the pain of the traumatic event and become an expression of Living Art.

Training in the martial arts mirrors the internal process of waking to our pain and finding the courage to step forward. Indeed the parallels of healing can be found everywhere. Perhaps this is why so many of us seeking our own healing quite often without seeing at first what it is we have brought to ourselves. Become Living Art by Honouring yourselves and ALLOWING … sometimes allowing is about forcing our minds to face the pain … because the limited ego program based mind does not like to see the pain we have held onto for so long.

As a martial artist I see the parallels in healing and training all the time. When you are training something physically demanding like the martial arts … if you are just training your body and not being deliberate with you mind you are really only training about 10% of your deeper potential as far as I am concerned. And I have met plenty of martial artists that ‘play’ at the training and train as if they were living their little mental box and repeating the broken record over and over and over.

The mind is the key to unlocking the body. In the internal martial arts like Taiji and Baguazhang and Xingyi …the key is to be relaxed but fiercely aware all at the same time. Training any kind of physical art requires focus and determination … and those moments when we are tired and exhausted and feeling broken by the hours and hours of training ….we have two options. We either shutdown and push through and push the pain down and bottle it up and ignore it or we let the pain in and let it fuel our desire to reach for more of ourselves. Welcoming the pain in neutralizes its momentum, absorbs all the energy the mind has built up to isolate it and build walls to hide it, and finally letting the pain in will let everything dissolve and pass through you without becoming another brick in the wall keeping you from feeling the depth of your courage.

Being open to hear yourself is an art and is how we can really learn how to be alive. The path is full of twists and turns and tricks the mind will play on you – shoving limited opinions in your face like a sandstorm. Anyone can give themselves the Gift of becoming Living Art .. all it takes is a little courage. Sometimes it is hard to find the courage … other times the momentum from putting the time in training the mind and the body makes it seem easy. And then we go deeper.

In the end it all comes down to how much you value yourself and what you are choosing to believe in. How far can you go and how far do you want to go? How much courage will you reach for to open the Path even more? Amazing how deep a little rabbit hole can seem some times.

Living is more than one system of opinions. Everyone has that broken record in their collection. Sometimes it feels comfortable to put it back on the record player and listen .. wistfully pinning over old memories… but when you open your music library up to other artistic expressions …well then the air changes a bit and seems more alive and once you have realized how much more to Living there is …when you realize how much Art there is in the world.

Everyone has their own expression and their own Art of Living their lives. To stand and be present and accountable for one’s own expression is what opens you up to more of who you are. Training the mind, waking the body up to feel and allowing one’s Self to fully feel and to not shutdown but to embrace what you do find when you really look at your Self. That is Living Art.

Becoming Living Art only takes a bit of courage … and everyone already has the keys to their own art inside them. Training in the martial arts has shown me that the mind and body are deeply connected. Within that connection is where I have discovered a path to find my own keys. This path has always been full of challenges that change with each new key I give myself. The more I choose to look inside the more I challenge myself with accepting what I find. A little bit of courage can really go a long way. Learning to Live is the most amazing journey anyone can ever choose.

And remember … all those keys are inside you. Already. Breath and listen.

Listening Means Going Inside to Hear

We are born into a world built on the illusion of five senses. Why do I say illusion …? I say illusion because the five senses only allow us a small glimpse of the world.

To discover the deeper aspects of reality one has to learn how to listen – and not with the ears. I mean listen with every layer of tissue and bone and every feeling we register inside of our bodies. The five senses provide us with a lot of information – but all based in the world outside of our bodies. It is the information – our feelings – inside our bodies that truly give us our connection to reality. Depending on how aware we are of what we are listening too, wether we give more value to that information passed to us through the outside world through our limited five senses than to the internal dialogue determines the quality of life we live.

Listening is all about feeling. This is why I love qigong and the internal martial arts – because the ONLY way you can learn them properly and understand them is by taking the time to create space inside and learn to listen to all the information INSIDE. The neijia work on the fine and subtle layers of tissues in the body called the fascia. The fascia are all those tissues that are in and around the bones, muscles and are what connect the tendons and ligaments to our bones and organs. From a purely physiological point of view, the ability to tone and stretch the fascia as one does with qigong and arts like Taijiquan and Baguazhang and Xingyiquan truly will augment a person’s health as one’s fascia is opened and relaxed through the internal mechanics of these arts. On a more subtle level the ability to feel the engagement of the fascia in the body will lead to the deeper listening skills these arts are famous, even legendary for.

In turn, the listening skill of this nature requires a kind of patience that is directly conducive to a deepening of an ability to feel inside – to feel one’s language of feeling that lie underneath the heavier layers of emotions programmed into us from the five senses reality of the outside world. This kind of skill with listening is where the physical arts begin to step across that line of being purely physical into something else. This evolution of awareness is not for everyone. My own personal experience has shown me – like playing Taiji push hands – that there are always gaps in my understanding of self to work on and refine so I can go deeper within. I have been shown that the learning never ends and the courage for the long road is what is required to not just talk the talk but walk the walk.

Listening is what truly opens the mind up to feel beyond the limited information of the outside world and to be able to feel our way into our Hearts and to be able to find Peace in the midst of Chaos.

Listening requires patience like all learning experiences. In the end we have only our own responsibility to ourselves to step forward on our Journey. Regardless of the Path.

It also in a manner of speaking symbolizes a man/woman’s rising from materialism to be able to see beyond the mundane into the vastness that is really our Universe, and our own minds-

Taipei, June 7 (CNA) Taiwanese researchers have identified one possible reason that practitioners of the martial art tai chi tout its health benefits: shadow boxing apparently reinvigorates stem cells.

In a study published in the international medical journal Cell Transplantation, a research team found that tai chi can increase the number of stem cells in practitioners.

Lin Hsin-jung, a neural surgeon and head of China Medical University Beigang Hospital in southern Taiwan, said Saturday that his team’s research has been selected as the cover story for the latest issue of the journal.

I find if anything balance is the bedrock of living a life where I work two jobs and teach qigong and neijia – baguazhang primarily – and have to keep up with my training. Fitting every little bit into my schedule as I possibly can. Today when I parked my car I did my Chen Taijiquan 42 Fajing set four times to wake myself up before heading into the office. One of the main reasons I love the Internal Chinese martial arts is because they require a patience and dedication uncommon in other arts. They require one to feel the balance inside the body, to feel the way the bones move and to feel where the breath is with each subtlety of alignment and shifting of movement. In this way one can wake up to the inner world of Flow by listening to this balance and back and forth of movement. Balance … is in everything if we make the choice to be present and aware of how we are choosing what we are choosing. Peace.
